For an older adult who can still use public transportation safely, SEPTA’s Senior Fare Program can make regular trips much more affordable.
Adults age 65 and older can ride SEPTA buses, trolleys, and Metro routes free with a valid Senior Fare card. Regional Rail is also free when both the starting and ending stations are in Pennsylvania. Reduced fares apply when traveling to or from stations in New Jersey or Delaware.
A Senior Fare card is not the same as supported transportation. The rider still needs to safely reach the stop or station, board the vehicle, manage the route, and recognize where to get off.
Caregiver tip: Before relying on public transit, think through the entire trip. Can your loved one manage the stop, stairs, transfers, weather, crowds, and any unexpected delay? Free transportation is helpful, but only when it matches the person’s actual ability to travel safely.
Applications and renewals may be handled through participating Pennsylvania Legislative District offices or at SEPTA Headquarters (1234 Market Street; Phila PA). Contact SEPTA directly to confirm identification requirements, appointment availability, and current program rules.
